Uploading at the exact recommended dimensions matters because every platform crops and re-encodes what you send it: an oversized upload gets downscaled by a worse scaler than your editor's, and a wrong aspect ratio gets center-cropped, cutting off whatever sits near the edges. One master image per aspect ratio is usually enough: export at 2× display size, keep text inside the middle 80%, and let the platform handle the rest. For feed posts that share dimensions across networks, one crop serves all of them.
